Early American Living: Decorating an 1820s Christmas Tree
We really like this channel! We learn so much about early American life. Please enjoy!
Being half German I decided to take part in this trend quickly growing popularity in the Americas – indoor Christmas trees. These are decorated with fruits and cookies, hence why they were often once called Sugar Trees. If you had children they would have also been decorated with toys which the children couldn’t play with till Christmas day. These trees were usually put up only a few days before Christmas to preserve the quality of the sweets. On Christmas day the family was allowed to pick off the sweet fruits and cookies from the tree. Other common decorations were small candles, ribbons, and small paper envelopes filled with dried fruit.
